Cliff Notes

Thanks to its Acadian history, Grand-Pré National Historic Site is on the short list to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the 1840s, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow came here and penned the epic poem “Evangeline” about an Acadian heroine.

Favourites from a sommelier-led tour of the area’s burgeoning wineries (with Valley Wine Tours) include the not-too-sweet maple wine from Gaspereau Vineyards and Domaine de Grand Pré’s local varietal, L’Acadie Blanc.

Head brewer Wayne Shankel’s signature microbrew at Paddy’s Brew Pub is Raven’s Ale, a favourite among the regular crowd of Acadia University students. Every October, during the valley’s pumpkin festival, Shankel brews a special beer with the fruit.

At eatery-lounge On the Verge, singer-songwriters and jazz types play on weekends, while an aptly named quartet, the Vergetarians, performs on Thursday nights.

Our favourite things about a Saturday morning stroll through the Wolfville Farmers’ Market are the chewy stone-baked baguettes from Boulangerie la Vendéenne, a basket of Honey Crisp apples (a new variety) and blocks of nippy wild blueberry-studded cheddar cheese from Fox Hill Cheese House.

With retro blue-and-yellow marquee and plush red seats (thanks to a recent reno), Al Whittle Theatre is a nostalgic setting for community theatre and indie films like Volver.

Harvest Gallery is all about homegrown art, which includes serigraphs by Alex Colville and quirky neo-folk art like Barry Colpitts’ glossy royal-blue carving, Sitting Goose.
