The Deluxe Sandwich
By David McGimpsey
Home

The word “deluxe” is usually translated as meaning something superior, but everyone who has ordered a cheeseburger deluxe plate in a North American diner knows it most often means it comes with fries. However, in the ragtag district of Pittsburgh known as the Strip, the great divide between sandwich and side has been crossed in a bold manoeuvre: putting the fries in the sammy. A tradition started in the 1930s at the Primanti Bros. restaurant, this all-together snack has since become a signature dish of the Iron City. You can have whatever kind of yummy filling you want (corned beef, sausage, chicken) at branches everywhere in town, but only the original resto in the Strip is open 24 hours a day.
