Heirs to the Throne

STANA KATIC

The Daredevil

Her name evokes that of a cartoon heroine with lethal superpowers and a cocktail-ring-size waist. Indeed, 29-year-old Stana Katic’s specialty is playing characters who are as sexy as they are fearsome. In the upcoming thriller Stiletto, Hamilton-raised Katic plays an assassin opposite Tom Berenger; in recent episodes of Heroes, she played a Mossad agent. And in the upcoming Frank Miller film The Spirit, Katic plays a cop opposite a covey of Hollywood head-turners: Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Paz Vega. A self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie, she revels in her characters’ Bond-style hijinks, like dangling from a helicopter: “I come from a group of very strong women,” she says, “and it’s hard to imagine women as being anything but ballsy.”

CATHERINE DE LÉAN

The Idealist

Since graduating from the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal in 2005, Catherine de Léan has been busy, appearing in feature films (La vie secrète des gens heureux), in television series (Les hauts et les bas de Sophie Paquin) and on stage (Août, un repas à la campagne). When we met the Montreal-based 27-year-old last fall, her face was on posters across the city promoting La Capture, director Carole Laure’s latest film, which stars deLéan. While the critics love her, de Léan is more concerned with her career – choosing the right roles and managing her workload – than with her accolades. “You can’t be everywhere,” she says. “Anyway, it’s no fun working 18 hours a day. I’m happy with what I have.” The graceful brunette enters the boxing ring this month to present Les boxeuses, a play about female relationships she wrote with friend Véronique Pascal. As always, de Léan – who doesn’t own a watch or a cellphone – isn’t worried about the critical response. With an irresistible mix of idealism and insouciance, she is optimistic about a long career ahead. “I’m here,” she says, “and I intend to stay.”
