Milan, Italy

Follow the lead of the world’s fashionistas and retreat to this 52-room city-centre former convent with beautiful gardens. (GM Attilio Marro could himself be an Ermenegildo Zegna model.) Suite 316, in typical Antonio Citterio design style, is all cream and black minimalism featuring an egg-shaped marble free-standing tub. Local fashion icons relax in the book-stocked lobby bar and dine in the restaurant, which flows out onto a terrace and garden in summer.

Michel Bras
Laguiole, France

The 15-room contemporary glass and stone hotel, overlooking the Aubrac plateau, awakes from its annual winter hibernation next month. Named after its Michelin three-star owner-chef, the hotel offers truly memorable cuisine incorporating flowers and featuring local Aubrac beef and the famous chocolate desserts of Bras and his son and co-chef, Sébastien (see right). The top suite, Aligot, takes its name from a local delicacy: cheese curds and boiled potatoes whipped to a purée.
