My List

A Wild West retreat with thermal waters, a former convent that is now a favoured haunt of Milan’s fashionistas and more…

Dunton Hot Springs
Dolores, Colorado

Relive the Wild West at this former ghost town, where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid once relaxed. GM Clare Evans is in charge of 12 lovingly restored log cabins, built in a circle. All have views of the San Juan Mountains, and Well House has a bathtub with below-ground 39°C thermal water that’s high in relaxing lithium. Enjoy horseback riding, hiking, spa treatments and dining family-style in the main cabin.

Bulgari Hotel
Milan, Italy

Follow the lead of the world’s fashionistas and retreat to this 52-room city-centre former convent with beautiful gardens. (GM Attilio Marro could himself be an Ermenegildo Zegna model.) Suite 316, in typical Antonio Citterio design style, is all cream and black minimalism featuring an egg-shaped marble free-standing tub. Local fashion icons relax in the book-stocked lobby bar and dine in the restaurant, which flows out onto a terrace and garden in summer.

Michel Bras
Laguiole, France

The 15-room contemporary glass and stone hotel, overlooking the Aubrac plateau, awakes from its annual winter hibernation next month. Named after its Michelin three-star owner-chef, the hotel offers truly memorable cuisine incorporating flowers and featuring local Aubrac beef and the famous chocolate desserts of Bras and his son and co-chef, Sébastien (see right). The top suite, Aligot, takes its name from a local delicacy: cheese curds and boiled potatoes whipped to a purée.

Managed by Dipak Haksar, this 484-room stone-fort-like hotel is an ideal base for business and leisure. Rooms in the exclusive ITC One tower have access to the club lounge and come with electric massage chairs and massage wands. There are also several outstanding restaurants and an outdoor pool, surrounded by immaculate gardens. Among the hundreds of fascinating Indian artworks is the 30-square-metre collage of Indian family life by Krishen Khanna on the lobby ceiling.

Cavas Wine Lodge
Mendoza, Argentina

After spotting the growing interest in Argentina’s fine wines, long-time hoteliers Martín Rigal and his wife, Cecilia Díaz Chuit, opened their own lodge, surrounded by malbec vineyards. All 15 suites come with their own plunge pools and outside staircases leading to rooftop decks for 360-degree views of the Andes. There are 300 labels to choose from in the restaurant, as well as wine tastings and vineyard tours, golf, hiking and riding.
