Where to Stay
Inn on the Lake, about a half-hour drive south of Whitehorse, is run by Renaissance man-of-the-North Carson Schiffkorn. (Owners of nearby fussy B&Bs were disappointed when Martha Stewart stayed here instead.) The log accommodations come with fine dining and linens and a decidedly unfussy menu of activities. In town, High Country Inn is a better-than-average business hotel.

Where to Eat
Klondike Rib & Salmon Barbecue, in the city's oldest building, specializes in locally sourced ingredients, such as muskox and halibut. Drop by the much-loved local hangout Midnight Sun Coffee Roaster for good coffee and sweets.

What to Do
The 6,600-yard, par-72 Mountain View Golf Course sets the local standard, but the nine-hole, executive-length Meadow Lakes Golf and Country Club has the most interesting holes. Off the green, shop for bracelets and necklaces made from genuine trader beads at a number of stores, including The Country House. Driving long distances is a Yukon birthright and the best way to experience the sweep of the land. The two-hour spin to Skagway, Alaska, is considered one of the continent's great tours. And if you don't have the time to arrange a trip into Kluane National Park, at least view it from below at Haines Junction, two hours northwest of Whitehorse.
