The Peanut Butter ’n’ Bacon Sandwich

There isn’t anything more sustaining than comfort foods like mac and cheese and chicken soup. For me, however, nothing starts a cold day like a toasted peanut butter sandwich and a cup of strong coffee. Admittedly not a common item at diners, the PB sandwich is available straight up on crusty bread at Montreal’s Caffè Italia (also justly famous for its cold-cut sandwiches).

In New England, diners like Becky’s serve it with the audacious addition of bacon. “Peanut butter and bacon!?” some say with disbelief. Then they say, “Oh wait – that sounds good!” And good it is. PB and bacon is also on the menu at Greenwich Village’s snug and cheerful Peanut Butter & Co., where they make this quintessentially North American condiment themselves, then slather it on bread in ways even Elvis could not have imagined.
