Perfect Pitch

Cat skiing with Big Red Cats shows you what the Monashee Mountains are made of. The Caterpillar takes you where lifts don’t go, so you can spend the day sifting those fat skis – the best for backcountry terrain – through endless powder. If Nordic is more your style, make tracks to Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club. It’s a serious workout.
We mapped out morning runs at one of the coffee shops on Rossland’s Columbia Avenue. Along with Alpine Grind, Clansey’s Cappuccino is a favourite; we had the breakfast of champions: Belgian waffles and burritos. Ski boots are de rigueur. For an après-ski glass of B.C. wine, the new Old Fire Hall on Queen Street has 40 varieties, and live jazz.
While Cat skiers head to the bushes, the top half of Granite Mountain (Red Resort’s second mountain) is reserved for casual skiers, which was how we found our new favourite lunch spot, Paradise Lodge. The gourmet barbecue hamburger, washed down with a pint of beer, is more civilized than any ski pub grub. Later, we rented the rustic Deane Cabin for a bespoke party. But there was nothing rustic about the meal: A team of French chefs whipped up five courses.
The spacious condos at Carolyn’s Corner will house all your gear. Though the bunk beds were lost on our grown-up snowboarding friends, they’re perfect for families. The best amenity was outdoors on the deck, where a soak in our private hot tub became an end-of-day tradition.
