In Rossland, B.C., the skiing is as pure as the driven snow.
By Erik Mohr
The off-trails at Red Mountain, Western Canada’s oldest ski resort, just outside Rossland, are as likely to draw powder buffs as gapers – those skiers more interested in the scenery than the sport. We were in the latter category as we cross-country skied to Le Petit Fromage’s cabin in the woods for cheese fondue, along with several bottles of wine. Wobbling back to base camp, we had a 360-degree view of the B.C. interior’s best natural resource. And all this prime powder isn’t going unnoticed. There’s almost as much buzz here as there was in its gold rush days. (Some real estate is up 100 percent since 2000.) But you won’t have to battle the hordes. Rossland’s genuine off-piste vibe attracts more families than frat boys; the nightlife, for us, was limited to star watching from the outdoor hot tub at our condo. As the locals put it, scenesters go to Fernie; real skiers head to Red.
