Though originally from Vancouver, Shelagh Plunkett spent part of her childhood with pet monkeys, large dogs and wild parrots in Guyana, where this story is set. Plunkett, whose work has been published in Geist and The Vancouver Sun, currently lives in Montreal with her partner and a 160-pound Great Dane.
