THE ARCHITECTS OF SOUND
As a teenager in Hamilton, Ont., Daniel Lanois (left) built a recording studio in his mothers basement. As a teenager in Dundas (a Hamilton suburb), Dan Snaith stole a sampler from his high school. The first is now a producer, world-renowned for creating haunting soundscapes on albums by U2 and Bob Dylan; the second, under the moniker Manitoba, is an electronic musician famed for his ability to extract bloopy, organic melodies from his computer. Two Dans, two plans.
