WHERE TO STAY

1 L’Hôtel Le St-James The gilded age brought up-to-date, with the best of the 20th century (dark, wood-panelled walls) matched with the best of the 21st (flat-screen TVs). Elegant, classy and homey. I got a massage, and now I can brag that the hands that kneaded Mick Jagger kneaded me.
355, rue Saint-Jacques

2 Ritz-Carlton, Montréal Lovely old dowager hotel, with fabulous public rooms and the wonderful Jardin du Ritz for summer luncheons in the company of paddling ducks. I’m not objective. My wife and I honeymooned here.
1228, rue Sherbrooke O.

WHERE TO EAT

A Au pied de cochon
Skip the stuff I ate, order sensibly and enjoy local bistro fare at its best.
536, av. Duluth E.
Tel. 514-281-1114
www.aupieddecochon.ca

B The Beaver Club
Hotel dining isn’t often the way it used to be, but it is here, thank goodness. Only major difference: Now the wines by the glass are worth drinking.
Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth
900, boul. René-Lévesque O.
Tel. 514-861-3511
www.fairmont.com

C La Binerie Mont-Royal
Did everybody eat this well during the Depression? What fun it must have been. Breakfast specials are a bargain, and the meatballs are covered with the thickest gravy on earth.
367, av. du Mont-Royal E.
Tel. 514-285-9078

D Bu
The wine list might appear intimidating, but a meal here couldn’t be simpler. Eat and drink what the owners recommend.
5245, boul. Saint-Laurent
Tel. 514-276-0249
www.bu-mtl.com

E Les Chèvres
The future of fine dining, informal but correct. All restaurants should be so attentive, so thoughtful and so careful with their green beans.
1201, av. Van Horne
Tel. 514-270-1119
www.leschevres.com

F Restaurant Delfino
Once you taste the onaga (Hawaiian snapper) and the anise-scented basmati rice, you’ll wish you had a neighbourhood restaurant like this one.
1231, av. Lajoie
Tel. 514-277-5888
www.restaurantdelfino.com

G Ristorante Brontë
Odd decor, with too many wuthering lights, as well as overly complicated desserts, but the chef sure can cook.
Le Meridien Versailles
1800, rue Sherbrooke O.
Tel. 514-934-1801
www.lemeridien.com

H Schwartz’s
Two tips. 1. Order your sandwich medium, with a little fat. 2. Once your grumpy waiter brings the food, don’t expect to see him again until he slaps down the cheque.
3895, boul. Saint-Laurent
Tel. 514-842-4813
