THE LIST: FIVE BEST HOTEL SHUTTLES

One&Only Palmilla, Los Cabos, Mexico If you are lucky enough to get a reservation at this exclusive resort – running at full capacity ever since John Travolta booked the entire place for a family party – you’ll be picked up at San José del Cabo airport in a Hummer 2, specially adapted for guest use.

InterContinental Dubai, United Arab Emirates A young military man in a large grey peaked cap picks you up at the airport in a shining metallic silver 2004 Range Rover HSE.

Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, Thailand Step from the airport into a Jeep Grand Cherokee; once you arrive at the property, sweet-smelling fresh-flower leis are placed around your neck.

Hotel Adlon Kempinski, Berlin After you are picked up at the airport by a BMW 7 Series, your route to the hotel provides excellent close-up views of the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate.

Raffles Hotel, Singapore Among the fleet of cars is a stately Daimler with the hotel pendant, the only non-ambassadorial car in town allowed to fly a flag on the front of its hood.

MUNICH
Stay in a suite at the Mandarin Oriental, right in the centre of town overlooking the famous Hofbräuhaus, and borrow a BMW 7 Series. If you have pre-ordered a BMW, you can visit the factory to watch your actual car being finished and then test drive it before making the final purchase. GM is Christoph Mares.

BRASELTON, GEORGIA
Château Élan Winery & Resort has its own racetrack with a four-kilometre Grand Prix circuit, where guests can drive a Panoz G Force car. The 276-room property is owned by the Panoz family, whose interests include Panoz Motorsports and Château Élan wines. (It was father Don, incidentally, who invented the nicotine patch.) Resort GM is Henk Evers.

CANNES
Live like a film star and stay, like Jodie Foster and other celebrities, in one of the two top seventh-floor suites of the gloriously art deco Hôtel Martinez. Your 400-square-metre terrace looks over the Mediterranean 30 metres away. Guests in these suites get a complimentary one-day use of a Porsche Boxster or Mercedes SLK. GM is Sylvain Ercoli.

DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK, U.K.
You are greeted at Bovey Castle by owner Peter de Savary’s collection of classic cars gracing the courtyard of the 1906 mansion. Stay in any room that overlooks the expanse of moors and hillside. Enjoy fabulous golf, salmon and trout fishing, biking and hiking, along with the spa and the best of English food paired with the finest wines. GM is Ian Solkin.

PALLISER BAY, NEW ZEALAND
Wharekauhau is on a 2,000-hectare Romney sheep farm, a two-hour drive from Wellington. Individual lodges look out at wetlands, birds – and sheep. The restaurant is renowned (one regular flies in from Hong Kong just for the curry), and guests love the indoor pool, extensive hiking and tennis in the lush fruit garden. GM is Bruce Garrett.   [ ]
