WHAT TO DO
Byzantine Thessaloníki Forget Philippe Starck: When it comes to wild ornamentation, our century has nothing on the Byzantine golden age. Spend a few hours at the stunning Museum of Byzantine Culture in downtown Thessaloníki, then go church-hopping. The medieval rage here was for tiny symmetrical cross-shaped churches, with complex brickwork
and iconography.
Airborne Monks For a truly bizarre and beautiful side trip on the mainland, go to Metéora: Tall, thin, thumb-shaped hills right out of Roadrunner territory are topped with 11th-century monasteries. Whereas once supplies (and monks) had to be winched up by rope, tourists can now drive partway, then climb rough stairs to get to the top.
