TEMPTATION ISLAND

RULE 1: Schedule quality time together.
As soon as my husband, William, and I arrive at the BodyHoliday resort, we split up immediately. The welcome team had cheerfully told us that, as newlyweds, we are to do as little or as much as we want during our stay, but I suspect they meant together.
Guests wearing the white cotton waffle robes that will soon become our spa uniform amble peacefully past in pairs with a blissed-out Stepford quality to them. (The resort’s wellness motto: “Give us your body for a week, and we’ll give you back your mind.”) A path takes me past the pool to a crescent-shaped strip of silver sand with lush volcanic mountains as bookends. Even at 3 p.m., it must be 40°C, the humidity making me sleepy and lazy. I take my first dip in the ocean, and as I float on my back in the silky water, I realize that this honeymooner has a secluded beach all to herself. It occurs to me that it might be odd not to know where my husband is, but I’m confident that he’s happy doing something, somewhere.
RULE 2: Be open to new experiences.
Our favourite restaurant at home has two choices on the menu – steak frites and steak frites – so my suggestion to share dinner on our first night is not met with enthusiasm. But after ogling my blackened kingfish, William offers to swap plates halfway through. We discuss the next day’s activities, a shopping list that runs from yoga to fencing. He puts money on the fact that I won’t wake up for the power walk at 7 a.m.
The wait staff is generous with the wine, so we retire to our room early, promising to return for salsa at 10 p.m. Instead, we fall asleep to the sound of strange birds chirping outside our room with a crumpled Us Weekly between us.
