Canada’s Next Great Neighbourhoods

Five years ago, we published our first look at Canada’s up-and-coming neighbourhoods. We ditched the vernacular of the real estate agent and thought about a neighbourhood’s value in a new way. We looked for places across the country where like-minded people could find a vibrant cultural scene in their own backyard (or, at least, behind their retrofitted warehouse space). Many of our predictions have since come true: Take the revitalization of Montreal’s Old Port, Winnipeg’s Exchange District or Toronto’s Queen Street West strip, which keeps moving ever westward.

We thought it was time to revisit the list and see which communities were emerging next. But what makes a neighbourhood great in 2007 is different than in 2002. Now we want bungalows to renovate instead of raw lofts. We want green spaces near our organic bakeries. We want a bar where they mix real drinks, not fluorescent martinis, and sophisticated local restaurants that don’t cost a fortune. Maybe we’ve grown up, but then so too has our idea of community. Which is what makes a neighbourhood great, after all. Here’s a day in the life of 10 of our favourites, coast to coast.
