My List

An Italian estate with spectacular gardens and cliff-side paths, a Moscow hotel that overlooks the Bolshoi Theatre and Red Square and more…

Summer Lodge
Evershot, Dorset, United Kingdom

For a year-round retreat from city life, spend a weekend or more at this classic English manor, dating back to 1789. (Author Thomas Hardy added to it in the 19th century.) Now a hotel, run by Charles Lotter, its 24 rooms include the sensational Seven, with a half-tester bed, a candle holder above the tub for in-bath reading and third-floor views of the immaculate gardens. Enjoy top gourmet food from Stephen Titman, as well as a quality spa and indoor heated pool in a stylish conservatory.

Wynn
Las Vegas, Nevada

Outside, the gently curved wave-topped building looks more like a giant 60-floor-high bronze statue than a 2,701-room hotel. If you choose to stay in its Tower, you’ll enjoy the intimacy of its stylish reception area and Tableau lounge along with its exclusive pools and cabanas. (The VP of hotel operations is Richard Cotter.) Suite 5506, with artwork including Picasso prints, looks out over Steve Wynn’s Tom Fazio golf course. Among the hotel’s many restaurant highlights is the fresh seafood presentation at Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare.

Villa d’Este
Cernobbio, Italy

A haunt of the rich and famous for decades, the 166-room resort is right on the shores of Lake Como. Suite 232 is one of many that offer memorable views across the water to Monte Boletto. CEO Jean-Marc Droulers runs the whole estate, which includes lovingly tended gardens with cliff-flanking paths and an ancient grotto with large statues high above the property. Dine on the outdoor open-sided veranda, and don’t worry if an evening chill sets in; the walls rise electronically.

Shangri-La Hotel
Dalian, China

Set by the sea, the city is renowned for its lovely gardens – the weekend retreat of today’s business leaders – and for its incredibly tall and beautiful people. (Most of China’s top fashion models come from here.) At the 562-room hotel, run by GM Raymond Bragg, choose a room with access to the 25th-floor Horizon Club Lounge, which has free Internet, and relax in the F2 entertainment centre.

Ararat Park Hyatt
Moscow, Russia

You are a block away from Europe’s most fascinating shopping area: the historic Tretyakovsky Proezd pedestrian street, which is lined on either side by every brand name, from Armani to Zegna. At the sleek 220-room open-atrium hotel, where the GM is Srdjan Milekovic, a favourite suite is 921, which overlooks the nearby Bolshoi Theatre and Red Square. The suite is also adjacent to the in-hotel Orthodox Church, where a priest can be requested by guests.
